Predicting potential transmission risk of Everglades virus in Florida using mosquito blood meal identifications

چکیده

The overlap between arbovirus host, arthropod vectors, and pathogen distributions in environmentally suitable habitats represents a nidus where risk for transmission may occur. Everglades virus (EVEV), subtype II Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEEV), is endemic to southern Florida it transmitted by the vector Culex cedecei muroid rodent hosts. We developed an ecological niche model (ENM) predict areas EVEV based upon georeferenced vector-host interactions from PCR-based blood meal analysis blood-engorged female Cx. females. Thirteen environmental variables were used calibration, including bioclimatic derived Daymet 1 km daily temperature precipitation values, land use cover data representing percent within 2.5 buffer 2019 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) program. Maximum of warmest month, minimum coldest driest month contributed 31.6%, 28.5% 19.9% ENM performance. types contributing greatest performance landcover emergent herbaceous woody wetlands which 5.2% 4.3% performance, respectively. Results output showed high suitability feeding on rodents throughout southwestern portion state pockets along northern east coast Florida, while with low included Miami-Dade metropolitan area most Panhandle. Comparing predicted hosts present study historical human cases disease, as well antibodies wildlife show substantial moderate highly these vector/host associations. As such, findings this likely accurate distribution date, indicating that method allows better inference potential than models only consider or vertebrate host species individually. A similar approach using meals other arboviruses can be vector-borne diseases.

Serologic Evidence of Widespread Everglades Virus Activity in Dogs, Florida

Everglades virus (EVEV), an alphavirus in the Venezuelan equine encephalitis complex, circulates among rodents and vector mosquitoes in Florida and occasionally infects humans. It causes febrile disease, sometimes accompanied by neurologic manifestations. Although previous surveys showed high seroprevalence in humans, EVEV infections may be underdiagnosed because the disease is not severe enoug...

Ecological risk of methylmercury in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA.

Dramatic declines in mercury levels have been reported in Everglades biota in recent years. Yet, methylmercury (MeHg) hot spots remain. This paper summarizes a risk assessment of MeHg exposure to three piscivorous wildlife species (bald eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus; wood stork, Mycteria americana; and great egret, Ardea albus) foraging at a MeHg hot spot in northern Everglades National Park ...

Virtual Florida Everglades

This paper was based on the design and development of a richly detailed three-dimensional virtual environment, which could be used to educate the public and promote ecological awareness, especially important for endangered environments like the Florida wetlands. The products of this research will result in a proposal and low-cost solution for a freestanding museum exhibit. This exhibit will all...

Assessing drought-related ecological risk in the Florida Everglades.

In the winter-spring of 2001, South Florida experienced one of the worst droughts in its recorded history. Out of a myriad of ecological concerns identified during this time, the potential for catastrophic peat fire and negative impacts to wading bird reproduction emerged as critical issues. Water managers attempted to strike a balance between the environment and protection of water supplies fo...

Local Mosquito-Borne Transmission of Zika Virus - Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Florida, June-August 2016.

During the first 6 months of 2016, large outbreaks of Zika virus disease caused by local mosquito-borne transmission occurred in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories, but local mosquito-borne transmission was not identified in the continental United States (1,2). As of July 22, 2016, the Florida Department of Health had identified 321 Zika virus disease cases among Florida residents and visit...
